June 9th marks Gatwick Airport’s birthday, a moment to reflect on its continued evolution as one of the UK’s leading international gateways. At DMWR Architects, we are proud to have contributed to this journey through a series of key projects delivered in 2013, each focused on enhancing passenger experience through thoughtful, integrated design.
North Terminal International Departures Lounge
As Design Integrator for the North Terminal International Departures Lounge extension, DMWR played a central role in shaping the project from concept through to completion. We developed the initial design into a fully coordinated and approved scheme, progressing it through production and construction.
Our team maintained a strong on-site presence throughout, ensuring seamless coordination between stakeholders and delivering a space that is both functional and visually aligned with the existing terminal environment.
Inter Terminal Transit System
For the Inter Terminal Transit System, DMWR delivered a fit-out solution designed to improve and streamline the passenger journey between terminals. The scheme combined modern, high-quality materials, including glazed walls and feature LED lighting, to create a calm, intuitive environment.
The result is a simple yet effective design that offers passengers a moment of respite within the fast-paced airport setting.
Pier 3 Segregation Project
DMWR Architects provided detailed fit-out design for the Pier 3 Segregation Project, working closely with the BAA design team to coordinate structure, services, and interfaces.
This complex scheme introduced prefabricated link bridges connecting the Satellite Core building to the South Terminal and Coaching Station. Designed as double-storey travelators suspended between three towers, the solution ensures efficient separation of arriving and departing passengers while maintaining smooth connectivity across the airport.
South Terminal International Departure Lounge
As Lead Consultant, DMWR delivered BAA’s new UK international departure lounge within the South Terminal. Designed over two levels, the space incorporates twenty retail and catering units, providing travellers with greater choice and an enhanced pre-flight experience.
The design reflects the expectations of today’s passengers, with open layouts, improved circulation, and clearly defined orientation zones. The result is a more intuitive, engaging environment that supports both operational efficiency and a strong sense of place.
Enhancing the Passenger Experience
Across each of these projects, our focus remained consistent: to create spaces that balance functionality, efficiency, and user experience. Delivered on time and aligned with evolving airport standards, these schemes have contributed to Gatwick’s ongoing development as a modern, passenger-focused airport.
