Garden Battery Towers, Malta

DMWR Architects were invited to participate in a prestigious RIBA European competition for the design of a forty-two-storey residential tower overlooking Valletta, Malta.

The brief called for a contemporary, high-rise residential building that would provide high-quality accommodation and amenities, integrated with an existing residential and mixed-use development.

The tower was to be the final architectural element in a broader coastal development, offering stunning sea views for most of its apartments, particularly the two super-penthouses. Additionally, the project required the inclusion of public realm spaces, amenity areas, and new retail units at the base of the tower and surrounding areas.

What DMWR did

DMWR Architects developed a striking design that aimed to optimise the client’s property resale requirements while creating a dynamic and attractive environment.

The design process involved a collaborative approach, with DMWR assembling an international team of structural and civil engineers, landscape designers, local architects, interior architects, fire engineers, and lifting consultants.

Meetings for the project were held in both Malta and the UK to ensure a well-coordinated proposal. The final design focused on maximising the views, incorporating innovative architectural elements, and integrating the tower into the existing urban fabric.

After a series of presentations and submissions, DMWR submitted their proposal for the competition.

The Outcome

DMWR’s design was highly regarded, earning the firm the runners-up position in the competition.

Although the project was not selected as the winner, the design was praised for its thoughtfulness and creativity, particularly in terms of its integration with the surrounding coastal development and its provision of high-quality residential and amenity spaces.

The competition outcome highlighted DMWR's strong design capability and their ability to develop complex, large-scale projects. The submission contributed to the firm’s reputation in the international architectural community, showcasing their expertise in creating innovative and sustainable designs that respond to both client needs and contextual challenges.
