DMWR Architects were employed from Stage 2 to completion as designers and BIM Coordinator on this complex mixed-use, new build and conversion scheme.

DMWR Architects were appointed to develop the design for PBSA scheme in Bristol. The proposed development in adjacent to the Old Bristol Royal Infirmary (a grade II listed building). The project consists of four blocks providing a total of 478 rooms with ancillary spaces and commercial areas and students collaboration spaces as ground floor. As well as 74 BTR units in the lister Infirmary. The original scheme indicated a total of 416 student rooms; post minor design alternations DMWR introduced additional 15 rooms adding value to the project. The increase was submitted and later successfully approved by Bristol Council as a section 96A application.

DMWR were employed as delivery architects the former Bristol Royal Infirmary Hospital site, which included the refurbishment of the Grade 2 Listed Hospital and chapel, a new build PBSA and enhancements to the public realm. During the preliminary stage of construction, DMWR sought the opportunity to increase the PBSA provision from 416 rooms to 430 through internal layout reviews with the contractor and client. Alongside floor plan optimisation, we also utilised our BIM knowledge and delivery experience to ensure the highest possible quality on site. As a RIBA Challenge 2030 practice, we demonstrated our commitment to sustainability on this site by adding solar panels and air source heat pumps. These measures ensured that the development achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and will reduce the lifetime costs to the client of running the building. The PBSA provides a wealth of amenity; common rooms, study areas, cinema and television spaces, and a private courtyard, which have been meticulously detailed to express the design intent. There were extensive external works around the site, with a new podium to provide additional public realm, which was linked to the chapel by a dramatic bridge. The reinstatement of the historic Earl Street provides a landscape route for pedestrians.
